Apple has finally joined the wearable tech game.
During last week’s keynote media event in Cupertino, Calif., the tech giant unveiled to the public their heavily anticipated smartwatch: the Apple Watch.
“All watches tell time. This one helps you make the most of it.”
As the slogan promises, Apple Watch, Apple’s first all-new product since the iPad first launched in 2010, can do so much more than tell time. It functions like an iPod, a fitness tracker, a cellphone, a wallet, and a remote control for Apple TV.
The user is alerted of messages, calls and emails through “tapping” and subtle audio cues, with different types of notifications having their own unique character.
Some other cool (yet somewhat random) features include:
Sketch: create and send drawings to friends who can watch it animate
Walkie-talkie: send sound bites using built-in speaker and microphone
Tap: send friends a silent, gentle tap they’ll feel on the wrist. A good way to let them know you’re thinking of them, but not enough to solicit a text or call.
Heartbeat: the built-in heart rate sensor records and sends your heartbeat. Because nothing says I love you like the sound of your beating heart.
Besides the tech features, the company focused on making their product withstand everyday use, during all kinds of routine activities.
“We use a cold-forging process that makes the 316L stainless steel 40 percent harder and less susceptible to nicks and corrosion. We also reduce impurities to achieve the mirror finish. An additional diamond-like carbon (DLC) layer gives the space black stainless steel its distinctive look.”
Apple has always excelled with the design of their products, and the Apple Watch is no different. The 18 model collection offers a wide array of band materials and closure styles, including three different leather bands, a link bracelet, a Milanese loop, and a band made from high-performance fluoroelastomer. The opportunities for personalisation are almost overwhelming.
